Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) International Symposium and Workshop

Funding Opportunities

Special bursary opportunity for PhD students!

Submit your abstract now for a chance to receive support and interact with scientists, policy makers, veterinarians, field staff and the livestock producers on the latest developments in FMD research, diagnostics and control measures.

The Organising Committee, with the support from the Australian Government Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, is giving at least one overseas PhD student the opportunity to attend the Symposium and Workshop free of charge.

Applicants must currently be working on a Foot and Mouth Disease research project and also submit an abstract relevant to one of the Symposium four key themes.  Selection by the Organising Committee will be based on the quality of the abstract and a genuine need for financial support.

On top of the complimentary registration fee for the Symposium and Workshop, successful applicants will receive an honorarium of a maximum of AUD3,000 to cover the costs of economy airfares between home country and Melbourne and up to four nights accommodation in Melbourne.

To apply for the bursary:

    • Submit your abstract by 23 November 2009.  Click on the button below for further information and to submit.
    • When submitting your abstract, you will need to select “Oral – PhD bursary” on the Abstracts Submission page as your type of presentation.
    • Email fmd2010@arinex.com.au with motivation as to why you should be selected as well as explaining your need for financial support.

Please note that selection will be based on quality of abstract and genuine need for financial support and that the Organising Committee's decision will be final. Authors will be notified of their acceptance by 16 December 2009.

The below information details which funding bodies potential delegates to the FMD Symposium and Workshop can approach for financial support to attend.

Please note that these are recommendations and no agreement has been entered into with these organisations by the Organising Committee. It is up to the delegate to contact these organisations to find out whether they would offer funding for FMD 2010 delegates and if so, to follow their application processes for funding.

For the most part, the starting point is your national UNDP office that can help you obtain the necessary forms to complete. Much of this is available over the web; please browse the websites given below. You invariably need to get endorsement from the Government Department in your country responsible for liaising with the Organisation. For example with IAEA, it is either the Ministry of Energy or the national AEC (Atomic Energy Commission). For scientists in research institutes, these are not your normal points of contact and you may need to follow up with different funding agencies. This process takes time, particularly with UN fellowship applications so please start looking at processing now if you wish to come in April 2010. If we can help in any way, for instance to add some time at AAHL for training, please discuss this with us. You can contact us at: FMD2010@arinex.com.au
